The Government of Afghanistan strongly welcomes today’s decision by U.S. President Barack Obama to keep 8,400 troops in Afghanistan through the end of his term.
As the White House noted, this decision was made after a thorough and careful assessment of the situation and supports long-standing U.S. policy to stand with Afghanistan against the common threats our two nations collectively face.
Afghanistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Hamdullah Mohib, said: “We see this decision as further reinforcement of the strong partnership between America and Afghanistan and believe it will have a positive impact on the battlefield, as well as lay the groundwork for a renewed peace effort, which is the national interest of both our countries.”
He continued: “While Afghan forces will remain in the lead role for providing security across the country, this decision assures us that they will continue to receive invaluable training and assistance in the fight against regional and global terrorist groups and their affiliates.”
